Question "Typical" read noise values?

I found an interesting page on Mr Buil's Isis site...

http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/isis/noise/result.htm

His test contains 9 Atik 314L+ cameras which have a rated read noise of 4e, looking at his results ( 3.8, 3.9, 3.9, 4.0, 4.5, 4.7, 5.4, 6.7, 7.7 ) the median is 4.5 and the mean is 5.
Half of the cameras do well and a couple more within 10-20% of rated, what I would expect for lower end priced equipment.
But one third have values between 35-90+% of rated... ALMOST DOUBLE!!!

So where do Atik draw the line on quality control? Are these just cameras left in the sun to long or is buying one a bit like a lucky dip?

I was considering an Atik 320E for photometry with its 3e RN and decent dynamic range of approx 4600, but if bad luck gives a value of 6e RN it's not much of a bargain after all.
Anyone tested their camera and found themselves duped?

Justin.

Hi Justin,

I am assuming that the author of this article got data from a range of users (see the footnote at the bottom of the page), and perhaps the methods for acquisition of calibration frames were inconsistent among data contributors. Thus I would be more inclined to assume that the cameras are far more predictable and compatible in terms of performance than this article suggests.

Ahh...note to self, check for footnotes and don't assume all data is collected by the same individual.
In that case I'd be checking my methods before submitting the results, even if only for my own satisfaction.

Thanks Slawomir, looking at what I just wrote I should take my own advice.

Justin.
