Diffraction Spikes

I know unless you have a SC or Mak your gonna get diffraction spikes. Do they annoy people when ya spend all the time taking astro pics and there they are? or is there a way around them.

Personally, I think they usually make a picture look better. But visually, they are a pain in the eye. I disliked them so much, I sold my Newt and bought an SCT!

Only when imaging the pleiades. I hate them then. Otherwise they look cool.

Love and embrace the spikes!!Thanks to Marc here I now also have a program to enhance my images with diffraction spikes, though as long as you don't overdo it.

They are so cool Carboni made an action to artifically add them to refractor images!

There should be an action against Carboni to let him swallow that action

Just joking everyone
Small diffraction spikes are ok but those BIG ones are out.

If you replace the straight vanes in your secondary mount by curved ones, the diffraction spikes will miraculously vanish, but don't imagine this is a free lunch--there ain't no such thing.

See here , here ,here ...

Diffraction spikes are Ok the scope and target will often determine the extent the spikes

Programs like Starspike Pro really do a good job with enhancing DS even when they appear in the image due to the scope used

The FOV, type of target etc will also determine whether DS are appropriate when imaging with a refractor

I don't like them, but sometimes they're unavoidable. As Martin says, Stars don't have spikes....

I dont mind the spikes there on photographs that are artistic and are meant to be. As long as they don't cut into the image they are okay. I prefer no spikes on images of comets as they distract me from what I am looking at, the comet. So I don't hate them, but there is a time and place for them... IMO.
