PENTAX *ISTDS - under a grand

A local company in Newcastle (JB HiFi) is selling the Pentax *istDS for $997 with a 18-50 lens. Nice intro to astrophotography with this one!

ooh that's a nice price!

I've seen your shots, but I wonder how others would compare them to a Canon 300/350D?

Is the chip size different? Is it more or less sensitive in low light?

I will be brave and say the canon is the better camera, but value for money - which is in the pentax's court. Mine will really be getting an astro workout in a little over a week.

As for chip size, don't know. They are different chips, one is a ccd the other cmos type. The canon is a little more pixels. A remote switch is $79, and it is compatible with any auto k-mount lens out there! Why heck you could be a complete capitalist and have two, one for broad astro shots for meteors shots and the other for specific imaging

can go from 200 iso to 3200

the *ist DL is a little bit cheaper I hear, similar to the DS with a few differences: Mirror instead of Prism, less AF zones (3 compared to 11), but essentially the same CCD.

a good mate of mine just mentioned recently that Canon are going to release the 20Da DSLR with better response in H-alpha (cheers Shevill)...should set the astro-imaging world on fire!

with the pentax, you've gotta love backward compatability - the *ist are fantastic for the price/quality....

Interesting review:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentaxistds/

Has comparisons between the Pentax, the Canon300D and the NikonD70.
