Lens Help Please

Hi All
I am about to pull the trigger on a Vixen Polarie and would like to get a nice wide field lens for my Nikon d5300, I only have the 18-140mm that came with it in the kit and have been happy with what it can do but I think i have progressed a little well i think i have others may differ

The shot below was taken with the kit 18-140mm lens.

Details are as follows, The shot was taken from my backyard.

d5300
18-140mm @ 18mm
5 x 20 seconds stacked in dss
f3.5
iso 2500

Any idea what a good lens would be for this camera ?

cheers

Graeme.

What's your budget?
A Nikon 12-24 is good but pricy, tokina 11-16 is great value for money.

HI Bo
I would say the Nikon is a bit pricey but the tokina i was looking at for the f2.8 but I have not seen any great reviews about it.

My budget is around what i have seen for the Tokina.

cheers

Graeme.

I've got one for my Sonys. The only issue is the strong vignette on full frame cameras below about 13mm.

Good luck Graeme,
It should work a treat with your DX sensor.

How about the Samyang 14mm F2.8 as a 'cheap and cheerful' option?
I think you can get it with any sort of DSLR mount you want and I believe it can handle FF.

I have the Tokina 11-16mm for Canon and find it very good and sharp.
I have seen some excellent shots with the Samyang 14mm also. I don't "think" the Samyang has autofocus though (not important for astro work anyway). The Tokina is also a good all purpose wide angle lens for landscapes etc..

That's right - no autofocus on the Samyang.
Works well for astro but would be limited as a general purpose lens if that's what the OP is after.

Samyang 14mm F2.8 is the go. Lots of good images posted with that. The distortion does not show up in landscape images only when there is an object closer to the lens.

No AF but you don't use AF on nightscape shots anyway. Live view on your LCD screen is more accurate for focus than most AFs.

I've owned both and was far happier with the Samyang.

I also like the Samyang 8mm for full sky shots.

If you can borrow one, then that is great, you never really use autofocus on lenses that wide anyway.
