Hi all, tried to use Teamviewer tonight to look in on the scopes and got a message saying my usage was restricted and I need to buy a commercial license.
I definitely only use it for non commercial purposes but who am I to argue with their algorithm! I have sent them a message. They say they take up to 30 days to reply!
What are the alternatives out there that are easy to use?
If you have a Pro version of Windows you can use Remote Desktop. If your needs are only on your LAN security won't be an issue, if you access from the outside world there are a couple of easy steps you can take to make your connection relatively secure. One is to map a different port incoming to the default RDP port, the other is to limit the number of login attempts and lock the machine for a period if unsuccessful attempts are made to gain control. If your router supports VPN you can also set up a VPN connection for additional security.
Please don't open RDP to the internet and rely on using a different port to `provide security'. Merely picking different ports does almost nothing, your machine will be scanned and the altered RDP port discovered almost immediately. RDP across a LAN or VPN are potential options though. Another TeamViewer like program is ConnectWise Control (formerly called ScreenConnect) Free. I used the payware version at a previous employer and preferred it to TeamViewer.
I use Teamviewer between my Observatory laptop and the office.
It's a Cat5 lan cable to the wireless router and this gives me good access from my office PC.
I'll double check later, but I'm not aware of any issues.....
Update, I have switched over my PCs to "exclusively LAN" and have got it going again using IP addresses to connect. But I can only use it locally which is fine for astronomy.
