Spring Milky Way

A very wide field view of the southern Milky Way taken September 2018 at the start of the southern hemisphere spring. Image is panorama consisting of 2 rows of 7 panels each.

This was taken in the central west of NSW, Australia near the town of Nyngan. Location was about 15kms from Nyngan looking west towards the town and the setting Milky Way. We can see the planet Mars very proud and centre of the field of view and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) in the top left and close by is the globular cluster, 47 Tucana.

Data captured with a Canon 60Da DSLR and Samyang 14mm lens.

Very good colour. Plenty of dark and light without over exposure processing or too much black.

I will have to go back and try again with the 14mm and revisit some WA images.

Thanks Ray. The 14mm is great for these wide field panoramas. I allow at least a 20% overlap between frames to assist with the stitching process.

Thank you Dunk and Suzanne. Yes, the widefield Samyang lens has been fun to play with. I am seeing lots of good results from others in their range of manual lenses as well so I am thinking of selling up a few of my Canon prime lens and replacing them with the Samyang.

Clear skies.
