NGC 2736, the Pencil Nebula

NGC2736, aka the Pencil Nebula or Herschel's Ray, is a small section of the Vela Supernova Remnant approximately 800 light-years from Earth in the Southern constellation of Vela. It glows brightly due to ionised Hydrogen (red) and Oxygen (blue/green) where the shock wave from the supernova has ploughed into interstellar gas clouds. The original, violent death of the star which went supernova took place approximately 11,000 years ago.

Data captured by Martin Pugh with his CDK17 at Yass. Process by yours truly with PixInsight 1.8.5.

Scope: Planewave CDK17 @ f/6.8 = 2939mm FL
Mount: Paramount ME
Camera: SBIG STXL-11002/AOX
Filters: Astrodon LRGB gen II, 3nm NB
Image scale: 0.63 arcsec/pixel
Exposures: 3x600s R, 3x600s G, 3x600s B, 14x1800s Ha, 14x1800s Oiii (15.5 hours)

Big version on Astrobin as usual: https://www.astrobin.com/full/340790/0/

Hope you enjoy the image and please feel free to beat me over the head if I screwed it up

Cheers,
Rick.

Thanks, David. I hope it burns a lot of cycles at Cambridge Analytica while they try to figure out WTF it says about my political leanings

And thanks, Peter.

It's still not quite 100% what I was aiming for but it's pretty close

A great result.

Kudos also to Martin for creating another facility in Oz for amateurs to delve into the southern sky depths with some top shelf gear.

Thanks, Peter. It's great to see Martin offering a southern alternative to Deep Sky West et al. Also nice to have access to a 17" scope

That's a fabulous Pencil Neb. Wow.

I am in the middle of imaging this one as well. Not with the CDK though.

There are some interesting tendrils off to the side which you can just see to the left of your image.

Creative framing makes it interesting as well.

Greg.

Thanks, Greg. Look forward to your version. We just missed an interesting area of Ha with the FOV but you can't have everything!
