Hmm? Terroux Observatory returns a VIIRS 2017 radiance value of 0.20 and an ATLAS 2015 SQM of 21.47 so seems about right from my assessment ie. outer rural suburban transition or "pretty darn good but not remote...and still just 30min drive from beer"

Hi Imme,
Thanks for posting that -
it will help me decide where to move to.
I have to move house soon down somewhere near Lara in Victoria.
There are some quite dark places close by.
I am 11 at the moment on the scale which is no good.
Only 1km away from the center of Lara is 0.53.

cheers
Allan

I've found it really interesting Allan seeing what different people are up against light wise..... Been good to get some comparisons

I'm currently reading a .13 at home and I can tell u that's quite dark. You should get some good dark sky down Lara way too.

It's not just about Dark reading on clear nights, but importantly how many clear nights you can expect. Over the course of a year, theoretical perfect darkness at Lara Victoria is not going to be anywhere near as useful as perfect darkness at Coonabarabran NSW, or Winton Qld.

Victoria is in general very cloudy.
It will never be as good as Coonabarabran.
We take what we can get.
I'd be happy to have one clear moonless night per month
but I don't even get that.
I haven't taken any pics since January this year.
That's due to being too busy, but mostly cloudy nights.

I am hoping Lara will have good seeing but it's
close to the division between the land & the sea
which will cause turbulence.

0.722. Question should be how bright is your observing site.

Ivanhoe Vic ~16; my dark site .19

The corresponding SQM readings are 18.6 and 21.4 - 21.7

One measure is looking down, the other looking up. I'm not sure they are equally relevant to us.

Interesting post Imme,
I'm in Briar Hill, Yellow zone reading 5.69
The backyard bush block surrounds are well protected from light pollution as far as the burbs can dish out with gum trees everywhere: but they also get in the way of most parts of the sky...
I'm in a good spot all being equal though.
