Fabian Neyer Star Removal Method for PI

Adam Block has been working on a tutorial for star removal in PixInsight using a method from Fabian Neyer:

Quote:
For the past few years Fabian Neyer has been demonstrating a technique of star removal that is based on practices that professionals use. He cites this paper of showing the intragalactic glow between members of the virgo cluster:

http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.../720/1/569/pdf
Adam's first video is here: https://youtu.be/1rEBbZhsDIU

There's a second video coming in the next day or so.

The process doesn't look any less painful and time consuming that what I do at present, but it does a much better job of removing star halos and the wings of star PSFs to give a pure starless result.

Cheers,
Rick.

Looks very interesting and definitely much more sophisticated than my routine with a single star mask and AWT - thank you Rick for sharing.

BTW, I could easily take out the halos around the largest stars with a CloneStamp

Haven't watched the entire videos but what I saw of the first one looks good. Will have to reference this when I finally get back to imaging. Thanks for sharing, Rick!

Yes, it's quite a process, Suavi. I have been wondering if it can be at least partly scripted.

I also use CloneStamp as a last, but effective, resort

Some good ideas just for building star masks in the first one, Lee. Hope you're back into it soon...

Was interesting watching both of them. It's nice to see that some of the things I was doing is actually being done by others and not just adhock on my behalf

I was actually going to ask you about scripting...

I confess of using CloneStamp on large halos, but only on colour data - never on Luminance

It's always interesting to see how other folks do stuff.

A few things in here I might adapt to my existing process based on Gerard's method. Will have to run a processing comparison and see if this is better for my workflow as is or to guide improvements in my workflow.

Had a bit of a play around watching this technique last night, and playing with some of my images. Quite a process. I couldn't get a good result, but was more than likely my impatience and tiredness. I'll have to revisit when fresher and more time. If nothing else, did give some tips/ideas on mask generation for other processing work.
