Longest Download in History

Hi guys, just thought I would share this with you.

I decided to buy and download Microsoft Office, and after paying for it it sent me a link to download it, all good i thought.

I clicked and it started, however very slowly, and as it progressed i noticed it would jump from 40 kb's to 1 kb and then to 9 kb's and so on.

It was a 745Mb download so I had to let it run during the night while i went to bed, it took 7.30 hours.

Hows that for slow download speeds.

I only have a chainsaw with a 30mm bar, might take a while with a tree that big, I will start tomorrow.

Chainsaw?

Hello Leon

How do you get the signal into your computer?? is it an option to mount the dongle on a stick, post...........whatever, away from you so it is not shaded by the tree??

If you can feed the signal into a router a network cable could be many feet ( meters ) long, how about a USB cable??

Failing that hire a bigger chainsaw!

Equipment

Hello Leon

So you don't have any sockets available.

How do you get the signal from the dongle ( or whatever it is ) to your computer?

Do you have any WiFi routers that you could turn into a bridge?

Am I missing something? if a tree is in your line of sight and you are in a semi or rural location is anything stopping you from physically having the dongle in a direct LOS to the telecommunications tower and then getting the data stream to your computer.

I'm in Bathurst and just ran a Speetest on my phone ( Telstra, Samsung Note 9 ) I got a 157Mb download stream indoors. Have you tried running Speedtest on your PHONE? If your phone can get a higher speed than you are seeing on your computer then you may have narrowed down the problem.

Have you a second computer you can try - or in these social distancing days access to one you can also try.

Have you thought of a signal booster, like,

I assume that was an RS232 plug?
Used to drool over the DickSmith 300 Baud Duplex Accustic Couplers in the catalogue for $399.
Couldn't afford one after shelling out for my System 80 and Green Phosphor screen circa 1982.
Was hoping to get a Daisy Wheel Printer first.

Hi ED, mate I have tried everything known to man.

I have and have always used a Telstra 4G My Pocket Wi Fi Lite device, and it has proved to be excellent over the past years that i have had it.

We have traveled Australia with it and most times in the Outback it has worked pretty well.

The unit is plugged into 240 Volts constantly, and has no sockets for any other cords or leads, when it flashes green i have 3G and when it flashes blue i have 4G, presently it is green and something is making it all happen very slow.

I check the Dbm's and signal strength and it is all in the good to excellent range, and this is on either my lappy or desktop, so there we go.

A very generous member on IIS is sending me an Antenna and a WiFi device that he is not needing which may prove helpful, so time will tell.

Thanks for you suggestions.

Leon

Hello Leon

Good news someone is sending you some gear - I hope it works.

I had a look at the modem you have, two things that may help you, the one I saw ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpiRhB5xq0A ) whilst powered by 240Volts, it was actually a wall wart that powered the device via a usb socket.

The other thing was you could put two external aerials into it. If you have a shop ( and it is trading ) in the area that sells CB radios they might have a suitable aerial, a search on the net will show you how to build one.

Since the modem is powered through a USB socket, you could just try moving it away from being in a LOS of the tower / tree, you might not have to move it very far to get a better signal.

Anyway, food for thought until the gear on it's way arrives.

Have a good Easter

BTW, I checked out some of your photos - pretty good!

Ed

Thanks Ed, if they were the photos in My Gallery, well they are pretty old, yet i quite like them too.

As for putting any leads into it, one has buckleys and none, as mine has no holes for any leads, it must be pretty old i expect probably nine years i reckon.

Leon
