my first scope

Hi all, I'm a complete novice but after seeing the ABC's Star Gazing special I would love to receive some astrological photons direcrtly into my eye! Can someone recommend or sell me a decent beginners scope? I would like to be able to see the rings and moons of Saturn for eg. and perhaps a nebula or two!

Hi Joe

Welcome - I hope you enjoy getting a scope.

My suggestion is to have a read of the link below. It should give an idea of what sort of things to expect.

I've seen some Celeston (?) Astromaster 130EQs with various add-ons for around $300 to 400 and that would be about it for me.

I am also very new to these fora so I hope I didn't just reply to my own question!

Quite right Bojan, I don't know if that was pre-emptive text, a Freudian slip or sheer unthinkingness I my behalf.

yep you should be able to get a 130 astromaster second hand on gumtree easily, enough -there are a few around so making an offer would be god, ive seen them for 250. a 5" mirror will give both good wide field views as well as decent lunar/planetary performance
