Well I got my new telescope...sort of

Hi,

I couldn't resist when I saw it on Ebay ($190 delivered). So I bought myself a Sigma 600mm (F8) Mirror Lens.

I was reading up, before I bought it, and they say you can't take pro shots without a tripod......I figure that seeing how I am not a pro, what does that matter!!!

Managed to take the flower picture hand held though.

hi,

That looks like a giant lens, I will be very interested to see what sort of astro photos you can get. I am only new to this but you should get the same FOV as an ED80 and you wont need a focal reducer to remove field curvature.

I hate to be the bearer of undue news... but they're dark-as for astrophotography. They simply don't work.

Is it really that dark, I know its F8 which is a bit slow but it looks like a 80mm mirror and the central dot is not that big?

Paul unfortunatly Chris is right F/8 is slow and they don't image that well for astro photo's, but by all means give it a go.

I've used one as a guide scope with reasonable results

Hi,

Well there was way too much cloud around last night when I had it out, but I managed to get a few of the moon.

Need to practise with the focus but seems alright (for something so bright ).

But really I want it for terrestrial use anyway, that I can stop scaring the birds away .

Hi,

Well I was still awake at 4am, for no good reason, and the moon was at about Zenith. So I figured I would have another go with the 600mm lens at the Moon.

I think that for this bright object the only real problem is that it doesn't have enough reach.

The first image is as it came from the camera (resized) and the second is a crop.

Looks good to me . I would still be interested in a widefield shot of say the eta carina region.

Hi,

What Omaroo said about it not being any good for astrophotography made sense to me.

That said I figured that while I was out getting the Moon, I may as well point it at M42 for a couple of minutes.

First of all I haven't focused 100% and the seeing wasn't that good and besides that I am not that good at processing astro images...yet!, but the resulting shot is as follows...it's junk!

Regards

Daniel...
