edting astrophotography with the Gimp

I have had the Gimp for a while, I know a fair bit about it but I dont know how to stack images quickly and the only differences I notice are that the distortion goes away.
If you know any other good things the Gimp is good at with astrophotography can you tell me and possibly explain.

I don't own and can't justify the cost of PS so use the gimp sometimes.
I don't stack images in it but use the curves and sometimes make a very blurred mask to improve HDR pics.
I do my stacking and alligning with Iris
