Canberra fire 2km from me

Currently an Emergency Alert for a fire 2km from us, around Pialligo and headed towards Queanbeyan. Seems road out curently cut.

From ice and rain to now a freaking fire in Canberra...went from Watch and Act a little while back to full Emergency.

Time to load the car and consider getting out for a while.

Seems under control FOR NOW.

Wind still blowing towards QBN, but becoming more fluky as is typical this time of afternoon.

Sprinklers all on - ESA guys said DO IT. So we are.

NOTHING but lives matter. Not taking anything but the kids and cat.

Not heading out yet. Plan ready though, and that is STILL to storm the airport.

But what Unicorn do you pack?

Glad to hear it’s been downgraded Lewis. I had a bushfire 2.5km from me a few weeks back, luckily it wasn’t likely to cross the freeway I was on the other side of but still a little too close for comfort.

It could be worse - Apparently Sydney had 45 degrees one day back in 2003 though I don’t remember it being that bad.

The gale blowing all day in this heat though is what’s really killing trees and vegetation. Outside my office half the trees are dead.

Lewis I hope you feel less threatened. Scarey isn't it.
I wonder if it's such a good ideed China planting all those trees to reclaim desert.
I need to come up with a machine that can gather leaf litter as I can't see burning off will be an option in the future.

We had a fire this morning at Milton about 2km from our weekender. At the same time a number of bigger fires further down the coast.Thankfully and amazingly the local RFS has it under control in a couple of hours during a 35 to 50km/hr dust storm that raged all day
My hats off to these RFS guys and all volunteers !!

I worked out in it at a Kellyville subdivision at the time. It was a hot summer. Channel 10's Tim Bailey was talking "scorchas" on a regular basis.

I have seen lots of fires...and I may have mentioned this before...in the 1994 fires we lived on the river and evacuated to my small sail boat.22 ft bluebird. The fire came over the ridge ..a fire ball 300 feet began to swirl above the tree tops..I took bearings it was that big..it looed like an over saturated Sun in ha landed on the top of the cliff.
