which dslr?

Hi. After years of doing long exposure deep space film astrophotography, I want to go digital now.

I hear the canon 50da is suited to astrophotography, but it costs so much.

What other models and brands are low light sensitive too, for astro photography. Are all modern dslr's as sensitive?
Can I use the cheapest dslr?
is there a list or link to all cameras that can be used for astrophotography?

Thanks

My new: Barndoor, just needs a DSLR. and my old photos.

Best bang for buck currently is the Canon 1100D

IMHO any of the newer (post 450D) Canon's will give great results.
At a later stage you can consider doing the "mod" to further increase red sensitivity.

Depending on how much you want to spend, ultra-cheap and adequate, second hand 1000D 12 bit, 40D and 450D 14bit. Very easy to modify as well. Cheapest DIY mod, remove all factory filters and use an Astronomik UV/IR clip-in filter. Auto focus tested and works on 1000D. Can be used for IR as well.

I'm not sure if you can get any new 1100d's anymore (if you are indeed after a new camera).
I think the basic option is the canon 600d and even that is nearly out of stock which then leaves the 650d or 700d.

There are plenty of other good camera options out there (nikon/sony/pentax etc) however canon users have access to Backyard EOS which is great for image acquisition and Magic Lantern (awesome firmware update / program adding other features to camera).

However if you are looking at landscape/night scapes then there is a massive difference between these lower end DSLRs and say a canon 6d which has much less noise.

If you're prepared to consider Nikon then the D5100 has an outstanding APS-c sized 16MP sensor. I'm enjoying mine so far, though you (and I) will need a DSUSB cable to control it from a computer (not just standard USB). I got mine 2nd-hand but near mint condition for $340.

Cheers,
Cam

Branko,
Good question! Don't know.....
I had my 1000D given the FULL full spectrum mod (both filters removed) in the UK by Astronomiser.

You can still find new 1100Ds on ebay, and nobody so far has
mentioned the new 1200D.
