Flame and Horsehead Nebula

After 5 imaging sessions over 12 months I think I've got this image almost right, though I know I can improved on it with more good quality data and improved processing skills.

I've had a postcard of this same image by Marco Lorenzi on my desk for about 3 years and its been my goal all this time to improve my acquisition and processing skills to create an image of the same amazing quality. I'm not there yet but with Orion now high in the sky in the mornings I'll be taking advantage of the rare moon and cloud-free nights over the next few months to gather as much more data as possible.

Here's my Astrobin link to the higher quality version

A pretty good Horsehead Kelvin, really nice result, I particularly like that mix of reflection, dust and emission nebulosity on the left edge of the frame

Nice Horsehead Kelvin, Marco Lorenzi sets a VERY high bar so you’ve done well here.
Now it’s time to move on & use those new skills on a lesser known target
Cheers

Thanks Andy. I wont be able to let this one go until I get it just a bit better - at the very least to replace some of the old flawed data with new & improved data.

I'm keen to start capturing some new targets though if these bushfires ever disappear so I can see stars clearly again.

Thanks Nik - finally my wife agrees too ! She actually thinks this is good enough to print and hang on the wall (though I feel it needs just a bit more exposure time and tweaking)
