Moon with Canon RF 600mm F11 lens

I picked up a new Canon RF 600mm F11 lens today for my (older) Canon EOS R (not the R5 - I wish) and took a couple of tripod mounted shots from the back garden.

The first one has been colour enhanced in PS CC to show the Titanium and Iron rich regions of the Moon.

The 600mm F11 is such a light lens, it is a delight to use and very compact when the sliding section is collapsed.

1/60 sec, F11, ISO100 tripod mounted, the flip out rear screen was very useful in framing the Moon which was almost at the Zenith - no cricked neck.

At first I thought you were using the (seriously expensive) 600 LIII F4.0 stopped down to F11 not realising Canon had released a compact 600mm for the R series.

Regardless, the result is very tidy. And yes, an R5 would be nice

600mm at F11 gives an objective aperture of 54.45mm, so not bad for a 50mm finder sized lens eh. With the EOS R, it is a very lightweight, well balanced and easily handled combination.

To give an idea of how this 600mm F11 lens performs on earthly subjects, here are a couple of 1st light photos from our back garden.

1/1000 sec, F11, ISO1250 & ISO6400. Rainbow Lorikeets approx. 7 to 8 metres away.

I was looking up the Canon 600 lens you used Dennis and it appears that one cannot use it with a Canon 5D, is this right.

Yes - that is correct.

Canon recently introduced a brand new range of Full Frame Mirrorless cameras, the EOS R Series.

This started off with the EOS R, then the budget EOS RP and now the latest EOS R5 and EOS R6 models. With the new mirrorless EOS R Series, the back focus is much less than the classic DSLRs, such as the 5D (Full Frame) or 7D (APS-C) Series.

Along with the EOS R, Canon introduced the new, shorter back focus lens range, the RF Series and these are not compatible with the classic DSLRs.

However, with an RF to EF Lens Adapter, you can go the other way and use EF lenses with the EOS R series, but not RF lenses with the DSLR 5D or 7D series, due to back focus limitations.

Time to sell your 5D and get an new beaut EOS R5 for around $6,600.

Thanks for the pics Dennis.Looks like a great travel companion.I find it hard lugging around the larger telephotos with all the weight restrictions although that may be something of the past in current circumstances.As for the R5 I think the R6 may be the go for low light and end or days shots.Look forward to your updates.I have yet to attach the Ra to my 600mmf4 but will post a pic when I do.Dennis just had a call from my local camera guy and he has an R6 just arrived today it will be hard to resist.
