Canon EOS-6D announced

Canon's first consumer full frame camera, the 6D has been announced.

Featuring a 20 megapixel sensor and new features like touch screen, at an affordable price. The Adorama leaked price was $2,099.

Might be a good time for enthusiasts to jump into the full frame arena and make use of Canon's beautiful glass.

the only real problem with all the new Canon cameras coming out is that they are not software supported with their SDK - which makes them near useless for "special" events and computer control with third party software. it sound like a great camera but i will wait

I know what you mean, David.

The SDKs will eventually be released. A lot of people are waiting for the FoCal automated lens microadjustment software to be available to use completely automatically with the 5D Mark III. At the moment, there's manual methods.

I'm not sure what the delay is, but, it's annoying that I can't upgrade to Mountain Lion as EOS Utility won't work. I did check out the 5D Mark III software page on the Canon USA web site the other day and it mentioned that the EOS Utility update will be ready in October. Not too long.

But, yeah, if you look at this from a non-astrophotographic/special purpose point of view, it's a great starter into the world of full frame goodness!

So does this SDK issue mean I can't use a 5DIII with Eclipse Orchestrator until October, and a 6D likely not until well after the solar eclipse? Or is some USB control possible earlier than that?

(EDIT.. 6D itself probably not available till after eclipse anyway)

Phil

Hi Humayan,

You have your finger on the pulse when it comes to all things Canon.

Have you heard anything about the 35Mp+ 5DX ? or is this camera just a rumour?

I have just put an order in for a 5D3 and I will be ultra Pi$#*# if they release a new camera just after I have bought mine.

I would imagine the 5DX or what ever it will be called will be in a higher price bracket.

Thanks

Phil

Hi mate,

Nah, it's all just rumour and speculation at the moment.

It all comes down to what you want to do; if you wish to capture landscapes AND want a resolution monster AND wish to stay in the Canon camp (yay!), then, we just have to wait and see what's around the corner.

The 5D Mark III is a remarkable camera. Best piece of equipment I have ever used. I shot a party on Friday night in ultraviolet light. It was very, very dark in the room (ISO-6400, f/2 light) and the focus didn't let me down. What let me down was that I wasn't using an IS lens, and, a bit of motion blur crept into the images, as I was shooting at 1/80s.

You will /not/ be disappointed with the 5D Mark III. You can easily print 30x20" (I used to do this with the Mark II) without a problem. I haven't tried any 36x24"'s yet, but, I will do soon, as I have some concept portrait shoots lined up.

Thanks for that,

I trialled the 5D3 a couple of weeks ago, and yes it is a great camera.

I got an email a few minutes ago and the 5D3 has arrived in store, there is no backing out now.

Cheers

That would be great, if Nikon hadn't already released D600. Same price, much better spec'd in every single aspect (unless you count important features like WiFi and GPS).
Canon has definitely lost the plot, and went overboard with an axe trying to protect the sales of 5D MkIII. Even 7D (crop sensor, already 3 years old), which 6D was obviously based on, has better specs!!! I don't see any MkII user rushing to swap either.
If they target novices, D600 is one huge elephant they won't be able to ignore. And although I like Canon's glass lineup, Nikkors are nothing to be sneezed at.

Some interesting times ahead!

I think this is more a 6D versus 5D2 or 7D scenario for Canon users rather than 6d versus Nikon D600.

As far as 6D versus 5D2 goes I think it will come down to sensor performance. If the sensor has the same level of performance as the 5D3 then it seems to be a sensible upgrade as the 5D2 AF also only has 1 cross type point.

As far as 60D or 7D to 6D goes that may depend on your use. Again if 6D sensor is similar in performance to 5D3 then it should be a nice upgrade from 60D (no swivel screen though). For 7D though its not so clear as the camera is a step down in AF system and build. Some people want the extra reach of the 7D crop sensor with a pro body full featured setup.

As far as 6D verus D600 its much clearer. The D600 appears to beat it in every regard except wifi ($59 accessory) and gps.
Again Sony Exmor sensor with its class leading performance. Autofocus system is much more advanced on D600. Sensor is 24mp versus 20. High ISO performance is yet to be found out for the 6D but for D600 it is much the same as the sensational D800's.

D600 is 95% of the D800 whereas 6D is 75% of 5D3. Initial DP reviews of 6D say its a full frame with 60D body less some features less the swivel screen.

But if you are invested in Canon glass then again you are locked in and it would not make sense to jump to Nikon.
But the reviews so far are quite clear D600 is class leading here and it is being received very well and is available right now (Nikon learnt from the extremely slow delivery of D800/E after its launch perhaps?).

Greg.

Further comparison data is coming in:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=42533115 6D image samples blotchy colour noise

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=42535983 DXO Scores D600 2nd highest sensor rating just behind Nikon D800.

The question of whether the 6D is a reasonable upgrade from 5D2 though is not answered yet. I suspect it will be based on low noise at high ISO performance and an improved photosite design. Plus the low light autofocus performance of the one cross type central focus point.

It may give a nice upgrade path to 5D2 users who don't need the extra functionality of the 5D3 but want the improved low light performance and don't want to switch brands.

Yeah, but who cares what DxO Mark think? As mentioned previously. They rate little Sony MicroFourThirds cameras better than Phase One systems. Yep, they're on the money!

As for the samples, I'd like to know what converter was used to convert the RAW (if it /was/ RAW), and, how much it's been pushed in post.

Phase One Systems or any of those Medium Format cameras are really specialised animals that only work in ISO50 to 400 and then fall off badly after that. So for astrophotography they are not feasible. For studio controlled conditions yeah they are unmatched. So in that regards the DXo score I think is quite realisitic. If you dropped $40K on a medium format camera and then hooked it up on your tripod and tried to do a nightscape or a night time lapse I think you might be horrifed by the results.

DXO do rate for various aspects like high ISO performance, dynamic range etc etc. So its a good measure for sensors.

Having said that it is true the rest of the camera wrapped around the sensor does make the complete experience as foveon sensored cameras prove. Also I see 5D3 owners seem to have a high satisfaction rate compared to a relatively poor DXO mark. So your point is taken in that regard.

Also, I guess I don't think in terms of astrophotography, too. Just general purpose.

And, yeah, if you go through my posting history, you'll note I've mentioned the poor high ISO performance in DMFBs. They're designed for something else entirely.

Us plebs with our DSLRs have it quite good.

I hope this post is not actually true:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=42549303

A Canon tech saying 6D ISO performance will be same as 5D2.

That would give very little/no reason to upgrade from 5D2 to 6D,
perhaps even a step backwards except for the low light performance of the cental cross type focal point. It may mean you could autofocus off a bright star??

Greg.
