The EF50 f1.8 only fails in 2 areas against the 1.4: construction quality in too much plastic. And not having f1.4. Otherwise it tests about equal.
Mine is now in pieces and beyond salvation.
I can't help with ur problem Raymo except to say that the godawfully short travel distance between closest focus and infinity doesn't help. And I find this with all auto-focus lenses inc some macro, and it's annoying for someone who does it manually as much as i do.
I am looking at converting canon ed to ef mounts for this reason.
Painful getting sharp focus on astro objects with it.
I noticed a CA like colouring on any star shots i took and I think just my taking my fingers of the lens after focusing threw it out again. I tested it afterwards for CA on extreme contrasts and there was none, so......

I have a canon 1100d and I find that the lens that it came with is near on impossible to focus with. I got this adaptor of ebay for a couple of $ so I can use some of my old pentax pk mount manual focus lenses on the 1100d
Defraction spikes are ok with me
