5 position filter wheel, 7 filters, what standard combo?

Now it's arrived, I have a billion questions. But I'll start with just a couple for now...

The 583ws has a 5 position filter wheel. I have an LRGB set and also Ha, OIII, and SII.

Planning on imaging mostly from light-polluted home and like to do narrowband for nebulae shots. Definitely would be having the Ha filter in there. Also for the star colours, I'm thinking the RGB filters to apply just to stars so I don't end up with those pinkish ones.

What I'm wondering is if I should put the Luminance filter in there, or put in the OIII filter instead, and use Ha for luminance only. That way I could do Ha:OIII:OIII NB images and RGB stars.

Alternatively, and I don't know whether this is silly or not, but could put in Ha, OIII, and SII so could do full tricolour NB images and also have the G and B colour filters and use Ha for Red?

Got any thoughts? For specific imaging like galaxies or clusters I could swap out the filters, but figure that would be mostly on the few occasions I get to a dark site where I wouldn't need to shoot NB.

Troy,

You really need the L filter for your luminance channel when RGB imaging

I'd say LRGBHa since that will probably cover 95% of your regular imaging needs (unless you think you are going serious NB due to local light pollution)

Install the other NBs only when you intend to use them.

Can you buy a second filter carousel for this filter wheel and then you can swap them as a whole unit.

Thats the problem with filter wheels - There's never enough slots !

Thanks mate. Can get another carousel, but it's $200 or something. For the amount I think I'll be swapping filter configs, I couldn't justify it.

I think I'm going to be imaging NB a bit, and so was going to us Ha for luminance. "Normal" RGB might be reserved, at least at first, for dark sites.

Is there anyway you can screw the OIII and SII on the nosepiece of the filter wheel somehow? You're usually collecting LOTS or long subs for NB, so the extra screwing on and focusing is less of an issue. Pretty much a night on each filter (or at least 1/2 a night) for those to get decent signal. If you went this way would select L filter for filterwheel with the single NB filter on the nose.

You can add another wheel (like manual) for less popular filters. 4 popular in QSI and remaining in the extra wheel.

Not sure how this would go, but maybe do away with the R and use the Ha for the R channel as well, and put the SII in there instead. Then I could shoot Ha/OIII/SII for nebulosity and HaGB for star colours? Silly?

If I was using my QSI from Adelaide I would have Ha SII OII Green and Blue. Doing narrow band only most of the time and if you like some star colouring just for effect. Make sure if you get narrow band for the city to go as low as you can afford on band pass.

I bought another filter wheel. In the first I have RGBLum and Ha
in the other I put clear, Ha, SII and OIII
It only takes a few minutes to swap over and it depends on what you want to do.
I have astronomiks filters and ALL are par focal.

Thanks for the thoughts/comments guys.

I've gone with R, G, B, Ha, and OIII as I think that'll be the most versatile for most scenarios I'm shooting from most of the time. Will just swap in the SII maybe as needed.

You will need the Ha but substitute the OIII for a Luminance filter (IMHO)

I had the same dilemma, 5 position filter wheel with 8 filters used to be a pain swapping them around so after a while i got a 8 position filter wheel and never looked back Plus it minimises the chance of dust and crap getting inside the camera every time you crack it open.
