Yes and stupid...a magic attraction ..maintenance could be managed locally and like it is clear that so ng road work is how you keep the economy going around here..cast of thousands..any excuse to get money out there...... But no one cares ..I have enjoyed it I have used it and so selfishly I can say stuff those who dont care enough to do something...there may be something going on I dont know and dont want to know as I would get ropped in ...and I have done my share of leading the troops on righeous battles... someone else needs to come forward.

I don't know Glen but I would guess that the council will pay someone to demolish it and I expect it will just go to the tip.

Sad they Won't leave it be .. The timber would likely get sold off

The crews that maintain these old bridges were a very specialised bunch , I know a couple of them, many were made redundant many years back as they keep replacing older truss timber bridges with concrete, even then they had stopped moving new people into the trade and were moving towards contractors.

A few of those old timbers might be useful to frame up your amenities block. Years ago there was a guy setting up a 4x4 park out at Bylong that used old rescued timbers from a barn to build his shower block. I was there at the time with the Sydney Jeep Club, we spent a day digging post holes, dragging posts around, and setting up the framing. The use of recycled timber is always a good talking point.

old & new

Some years ago whilst touring in the SW of WA we came to an attractive old timber bridge with a new concrete monstrosity beside it. The road gave access to both.
So we drove the pair over the old and new bridges. Our thoughts were we would be the last of many to drive a pair over the old bridge and the first of few to drive a pair over the new bridge. People who only motor give scant regard to this sort of thought.

Interesting the different approaches to this sort of thing. It was not a particularly "Special" bridge by any means but where I used to live near Echuca there was a very tired old wooden bridge over the Campaspe river, so tired that the school bus was probably over weight for it. We lived there through the 80's to the mid 90's. They replaced the bridge some time after we moved away (resuming a bit of our old property in the process to straighten out a gravel S bend at the bridge, and removing much fun for the locals, all the gravel could usually be found in the grass on the outside of the corners)

The new bridge was constructed next to the old, they left the old bridge in situ to rot and presumably to eventually fall in the river.

I crossed that bridge several times both by car and motorbike. Any chance of a good photo of it before it goes?

After they leave it in the wet and damp mud for years to decompose past usefulness. And yes the timber does decompose without regular painting and maintenance, despite the chemical warfare conducted on it throughout the years.

My grandfather was a carpenter from the West Wallsend area near Newcastle and was in a crew that built many original wooden bridges in the far north and west of NSW during the 1930's Great Depression to keep his new wife and children fed. Some of his letters home make good reading.

Yes its a shame to see these historical engineering feats go.

I have driven across the old Tabulam bridge many times but it was exciting to cross the new one and look over at the old one.
