Which refractor?

I have an RC8 - with which I am very happy. I use my SBIG ST8300M with it - mated to a FW8-STL filter wheel - a heavy combination.

All is good. But...

I am tempted by a wider field of view - my previous scope was a fast f4 Meade SN 8 inch. It was good and wide.

So I'm thinking (only thinking at this stage) of a refractor and am open to suggestions.

The Tak FSQ look very nice - and mighty pricey.

Televue have the 60is which should give a good field with my camera.

Louie's new little AT65EDQ has a very attractive price tag.

I would be happy to match my Canon 70-200mm L series lens to the camera but there is no adapter that I am aware of that fits my filterwheel - only Nikon.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Pete

Pete,

Get in touch with Peter Lee at www.tan14.com and he'll make you/send you an EF-SBIG adapter.

He sent me one for my STL-11000M, and, it was only $50 including delivery from Hong Kong.

Thanks H

was that with the FW? I read online somewhere that there isn't enough backfocus if you have a filter wheel attached to the camera. I think the QSI wsg has the same issue

Pete,

Hrm, you may be on to something re: backfocus. I forgot about that. Have a chat to Peter and see what he comes up with, anyways.

Peter reports I need 44mm or less.

I have about 53mm so the Canon adapter is a no go.

Any other suggestions - short of trading in the filter wheel and using the Canon lens?

Hi Pete,

You may like to consider the TMB refractor:
http://www.astronomics.com/main/prod...duct_id/TMB92L

Or a TAK Sky 90 II. But you would need a reducer/flattenner for Astrophotography.

Dougs Canon 400 mm 5.6 looks pretty good for around $1300 or the Canon 200mm 2.8 at about $900.

after much investigation, I've determined that the Canon lens and SBIG won't work - not enough back focus sadly. I'm out by about 9mm.

Will take a look at the TMB.

Yes, it is tempting - my main worry would be the focuser - but its a very nice price.

Louie, where did you buy yours?

Anyone know what the illumination circle is of these puppies?

More specifically, will it illuminate a full-frame CCD without vignetting (too much)?

The sbig site shows nikon and canon adapters for the 8300 and it's wheel. Maybe flog off the FW8-STL and get a FW8-8300 and an adapter?

I like the tak FS60CB for a small scope. It needs the flattener or reducer for imaging but both are available.

[edit]
sorry, just realised the STL wheel will be 2" filters and the 8300 will be 36mm. doh.

Thanks Robin

that was my thought too - I have a set of BVR photometry filters as well as Ha and LRGB so the expense starts to go up.

Will look at the Tak FS60CB

For an 8300 chipped camera which is quite small and smaller than a DSLR, you could pick just about anything.

FSQ is pricey but its the alltime winning astrograph and matches the 8300 chip very well. You would be rapt with the resulting images.

Houghy seems happy with his 127mm ED. Larger and would need a decent mount though.

Perhaps the baby Q (85mm) is the go.Its a bit cheaper and still an awesome instrument and handles
even large chipped cameras.

Greg.

Greg

you are making this difficult!

I was keen on the Televue 60is - but the Tak BabyQ looks very tempting.

I know Tak are the bees knees - but what is the focuser like? My imaging rig is pretty heavy.

Would love to hear comments on the 60is if anyone has used one for imaging.

Pete

If it's anything like the one on my FSQ-106N, it is built like the proverbial s#@thouse.

Mine carries the STL-11000M without a problem.
