CCD For Planetary Imaging

I'm looking for advice and opinions on a ccd camera for imaging planets. At the moment I have the Meade DSI colour. I have a budget of arount £1000. Is it worth upgrading to the DSI III?

Yes, you could go upto the DSI Pro III, but you could probably do better than that for 1000 pound. How about these...

There are several paths you can follow here.

You can use colour CCD's or Monochrome.

In terms of colour, you would be best off with the Imaging source colour camera's. These are fast and reliable with low noise.

With Monochrome, there is a variety of camera companies available. There is the Imaging Source, Lumenera and Point Grey Research. I use Lumenera and have been really happy with it. Solid performer but I am looking for its replacement. Point grey is the top end of town; cost plenty but great performance. Imaging Source again is solid and cost effective but only 8 bit performance. Good cameras but if you want to go further you will need to buy again.

I really wish Imaging Source would come out with a 12 or 16 bit ADC in a higher end camera. There are plenty of other companies using the same chips as them with higher bit depth. Certainly there would be a market.
