New Toy Canon 500mm F/4.0L IS USM

Hi Guys, well I'm a happy camper, and you will see why if you click on these images.

For quite some time now i have been looking and saving hard to pick up a Canon 500mm F/4.0L IS USM Lens, and it so happened that I came across one at a very reasonable price, and the lens is in perfect condition, optical and cosmetic.

It also so happened that i had a very large money tin that i was putting in loose change and some notes at times, which proved very fruitful, to help with the purchase of this unit.

Alice and I took quite some time to count all the change, and notes,

Anyway here it is, thought i had better come clean as only one other IIS member knows of it's existence.

Leon

Thanks Humayun, I picked this up for another form of photography.

Alice was getting creative, and wanted a camera, so I bought her a 40D and a nice lens, so now we can get out in the outdoors, and do some other stuff.

I might let her borrow the big one, well maybe once.

You wouldn't believe it mate that Canon 70-200 F/2.8L is USM still hasn't arrived, it has been 8 weeks since i ordered it.

Leon,

Apparently, there is a worldwide shortage on that particular lens, which has lead to (false) speculation in some imaging circles that Canon has discontinued the gem. It will be my next purchase.

Regards,
Humayun

Houghy mate, it is just nice to look at, I have just ordered a Kirk 4" quick release plate, and a replacement foot for the 500, so they will be married on the Gimble Mount.

We can all tell that Alice is away for a couple of weeks, can't we,

Leon

Didn't realise you were buying a 70-200mm f2.8L too leon - you're really getting back into it (on Alice's behalf of course!!)

Wish Suz had an interest in imaging..."look Babe, we're gonna need a Tak 106 as minimum...trust me!!!!"
Doug

ps...the "500" looks awesome!

Thanks guys for your responses, and Dougie mate, didn't I tell you that one, about the 70-200F/2.8, opps sorry, but it has been on order so long I have even forgot about it.

Then I went out and paid for this canon, and now I have to find funds for the other, that is still not here, gees, I'm glad Alice is away for a few weeks.

Leon that is a great lens. Should give you a FOV of 4.12 x 2.75 degrees with the Canon 5D.

Wide open is the aperture 125mm? Be good to do a comparison to your TAK. what size is the rear filter holder? The earlier ones were 48mm but you can also get a 52mm drop in filter holder.

I have a drop in Canon rotatable polarizing filter that is great for terrestial use. You are welcome to borrow it for an extended period as I never use it as my lens is stuck on the mount.

Congrats Leon, that's a wonderful lens and on my future shopping list as well. Are you using a Wimberley setup btw? What do you shoot? I presume birds?

Leon,

Roger Clarke (www.clarkvision.com and scientist on Saturn Cassini Mission ) refered to this lens as a "life changing" experience! I think that sums it up pretty well, so very nice choice

Thanks guys, Bert, yes i will give it an astro run at some stage, and see the comparison, but if this lousy weather dosn't change soon, who knows, may get into collecting stamps.

The filter is a 52 mm drop in Bert, and I appreciate your offer, will keep that in mind.

Dave, it is going to be a bit of both, and I do want to try it on some nature stuff, Alice and I plan to get creative and try and capture some different stuff. I have also built a nice Gimble mount for it, see belowand am just waiting for a couple of items from Kirks in the states.

Terry, Roger Clark is right this is some awesome piece of work and super fast focusing, I hope to take it out in the field shortly.
