CCD camera and 4" scope

OK, as well as my dob, I have a 4", 900mm on EQ2 (I think) mount. I also have a motor drive for RA.

First question:

1 -Will a CCD camera work with the above gear (moon, M42 and other)?

2- What is a recommended start up camera if it will? Is monochrome with the RGB filters a good way to go?

Regards
Scott

You might get away with short subs, say 30 secs, with good polar alignment. As to the camera there are many possible but do you want to buy for the future, or just to play around with now? If buy for the future at that focal length it is hard to go past the ASI1600. You could put a reducer on the refractor. What type of scope is it? Is a budget achromat or an APO? More info would help.

Just to play with at the moment (if I do it).

The scope is a Skywatcher 4", 900mm on EQ mount.

I have no idea on CCD cameras and which way to go. I don't want serious at this stage. Entry level fine or next step up if results could be better.

I am also thinking about getting goto on my dob later on. Would that work?

Scott

Ok that's a reflector, and it is designed for visual use, meaning it is designed for the focuser placement and range to suit the use of eye pieces, not cameras. You may not be able to achieve enough infocus range for the camera. You could possibly attach the camera to a special eye piece.
I would suggest you start with a simple webcam to see if you can get focus to work.

Webcam or one of the ZWO planet cams should do the trick. For starters anyway.

I think you would be better off starting with a modified Canon DSLR. They are plentiful, cheap, easy to use, easy to process lots of support.

You can even simply stack lots of short exposures to get around poor tracking.

Mono cameras are not worth the effort unless you have a very reliable and accurate mount and they are expensive.

Imaging begins with a good mount not a scope and they tend to be quite an investment, need to be polar aligned etc etc.

Even with high end mounts they need to be periodically realigned etc.

Greg.

A zwo is what you need, it slots in replacing the eyepiece. Connects via usb to laptop like a webcam, use firecaptureto record some video and use deepskystacker or autostakkert to make a "photo" from that. thats the basic methology for most astrophotographs

Yes, a DLSR or a planetary Cam as others have suggested.
I'd also suggest you get a beefier mount like a HEQ5 so you can load up more gear and have a stable platform for AP work, plus you can have it connected to a computer etc.
