Short exposure masks for bright stars?

Hi all,
Tried imaging the gas/dust around Antares the other night.

Antares was a bright orange ball with a deeper orange halo which distracted from the subtle dust in the background.

Is it possible to use shorter exposures to form a layer mask in order to combat the glare from brighter stars (a la the trap in M42)?

Cheers
Doug

When you figure out the secret be sure to let us all know..

It's easy in theory but very hard to do in a way that produces a natural, pleasing image.

Thanks Phil - the silence was starting to become deafening!!
So it's tricky then!?
Thought it might be - perhaps a series of incremental exposures to limit the steep drop-off in exposure times between subs and mask??

Something to work on...
