Cometary Globule

I have been collecting data on on CG4 for quite some time. It's in a great spot for me and I collected about 36 hours. 20 hours or so is the Ha data but it was quite noisy until I collected 17 or so hours.

The globule itself is located in Puppis at a distance of around 1300 light years. It is a star forming emission nebula and has the really nice ESO 257-19 galaxy in the field too.

That's an awesome looking object, great job and dedication to collecting the vast amount of data for it!

Just wondering - is it a program you use to annotate the picture automatically, or do you do it yourself?

Looks good Paul, those star spikes have a wonderful prism effect - you’ve got the beast dialled in well!
From previous experience, there’s even more Ha there if you wanted to go deeper & push the background a bit more.
An awesome target indeed.

Well done Paul, that is the best picture
of this object and it's accompanying galaxy
I have seen, except for David Malin's image taken
about 30 years ago with the AAT 3.9 meter at Siding Spring.
Splendid.
Cheers

Nice result Paul, the deep red Ha certainly looks bold but I recon this object is a little more "dusty" ie brown but regardless, it's such a cool object none the less and that galaxy getting eaten is a unique pairing in the sky really

Very nice Paul, it looks very similar to another object maybe 2 degrees from the Horsehead. Very smooth and well captured

Nice shot Paul. Very smooth from the long exposure. You got the OOUK dialled in nicely.

Greg.

David I used Pixinsight to do the annotation. There are a couple of routines to use in scripting to make it happen.

Thanks Ron, but there are some very nice images of this target. I am appreciative that you think so highly of this one though.

Thanks Mike, yes the dust is reasonably evident but might need more luminance to bring out further. I have collected some more subsequent to publishing this image hoping to get more the dust out. I wonder if the Ha is overwhelming the look a bit. I'll try to pick up some more data when the Moon heads back a bit.

Thanks Greg, there are still some minor tweaks that need to occur but this scope is working well. The other AG12 I have is still undergoing issues. I am getting some adapters made up to allow that scope to take the STXL 11002 for wider work and also have a threaded connection to the Aluma 694. I trialed using a parracor 2 with a compression ring and the Aluma, but the stars are all over the place. So I am going to try to get the corrector that came with the new AG12 to work with both cameras. In the mean time I am still going to have this AG12 working.

Solid effort, Paul, well done! I'm not one for seeing shapes in nebulae, but this one always reminds me of an Afghan dog.

A lovely display of the galaxy eating globule. The dust overlayed on the red makes it look like a fire storm rushing through space.
