The old Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG EX HSM lens

Hi all.
I have been thinking of adding a fast lens to my kit for wide-field astrophotography, with Barnards Loop and other large structures in mind. I have a SIGMA 18-35 f1.8 Art already but have been looking at a 50mm f1.4 to get in a bit tighter on my FoV.
I use Canon 700D’s so have been thinking of the obvious contenders such as the:
- Canon 50mm f1.8
- Canon 50mm f1.4
- Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG EX HSM (the old one before the Art range)

Now before anyone tells me to get the new Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art, I am on a budget with a wife that is already giving me heaps of grief about my gear, so I need to compromise.

Question - How does the old Sigma 50mm f1.4 perform at astrophotography, and is it better than the Canon lenses? I have scoured the net for a review and have come up empty handed.

Advise?

Benn

Not the Canon 50mm f/1.4. It's very soft wide open and even stopped down a little and the coma is high. The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 (Non-Art) and Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II are sharper and have much less coma, but still not perfect, but may be OK depending on how much you like to zoom in and peep.

There are other worthy contenders in this area, such as the Sigma 35,40 and 50mm Art lenses, but of course you said you wouldn't want to go that way.

Best

Samyang have a range of F1.4 lenses that seem to review well for astro.
Try checking out those.

A lot of the Samsung lens have aspherical elements which help control coma. They do suffer from quality control issues more than Sigma and Canon however so it can be a good idea to purchase from somewhere that allows product returns.

I didn’t really think of Samyang. I have a Sigma 18-35 f1.8 Art which is an amazing lens. I guess that’s why I automatically thought of that brand to go to. Good idea, I will check them out too.
