Aggressive processing?

I am usually a fan of Robert Gendler's combined work, but there is something about his latest team effort on M78 that does not sit well with me - it seems far too aggressively sharpened and enhanced to my eyes.

See the image here: http://www.robgendlerastropics.com/M78-Subaru-ESO.html

Others opinions?

The data is of course magnificent, but being a huge M78 aficionado, this just strikes me as very unnatural and not pleasant. Of course, as I stated, just myopinion.

Agreed. A little posterized for my taste as well.

I feel that my processing is very conservative and restrained after seeing that

I actually quite like it, except for the stars - added spikes look very...artificial.

I do similar for shots of constellations as a way of "highlighting" the main constellation stars.

For me this is very aggressively processed like most "hdr" images, to me its juvenile ratherer than artistic. I went through the same phase 15 yrs ago.

HDR... well, not really in my opinion. To me, the image looks far too hard, as if you were actually near the nebulosity you would slam into it like a brick wall. It looks rigid, far too defined, rather than billowing and flowing.

As I said, a shame, as the Subaru data is usually exceptional, and Rob's processing is usually top notch. This one looks like an amateur discovering deconvolution and sharpening for the first time (we have all been there )

Whilst Rick's and Mario's M78's may lack the extreme depth of the Subaru data, I feel both Rick's and Mario's M78 renditions to be vastly superior in terms of aesthetics and realistic representation.

Realistic as in what you expect to see, or what you think your eyes would see if up close, or in what is a scientific representation? Basically, there is no truly correct way to represent AP data!

Correct... but there are less than satisfactory ways to represent AP data,
when the processing artefacts detract more from than the image than the processing adds, then that is an incorrect use of processing.
