Ok, looks like I might get to use my new DSLR tonight, can someone give me some....

...pointers?

I have a canon 1000d and the T ring and a 2" adapter. Running it through an 8" F4.5 Newt on an HEQ5 mount, unguided for the moment. I'm only looking at taking wide field shots, as I figure that would be the easiest place to start. What settings should I put the camer on.

Do I need to do anything with the white balance? I know how to add a custom white balance but if you are taking pictures of the sky what is my frame of reference for white balance. I'm thinking that its not so important, am ai wrong?

What ISO should I use for very light polouted skies?

Thanks in advance.

Sandy, for a first time effort, just keep your exposures short, until you get the hang of it, and seeing that your set-up is not Auto Guiding at the moment, I would no exceed 60secs, unless you have perfect polar alignment.

Just leave the camera on AWB, it will look after it for you, you can always fiddle with that sort of stuff when you get more experienced.

ISO speed, stay around 400, if your skies are pretty polluted.

Your scope is F/4.5, so it is reasonably fast, the main thing to do is enjoy, and have fun, that is what it is all about, Imaging can be a night mare, but it is fun learning.

Just have a look at my Deep Space attempt of the Helix

You'll be right, just take your time and enjoy, image something that is not to difficult, and maybe visible to the naked eye, it all depends on what is around at the time you wish to take you pics.

Expect a few failures, we all do, but then we know better next time.

Hope your nights are clear.
