Hi From Canberra Gary. Kalgoorlie is my old hometown so I remember those clear skies well. My first scope was a Japanese made Vixen Refractor that I used there on my many nights out :-)

I first became interested in Astronomy while working near Kalgoorlie. While there I bought some binoculars and a guide book. The skies there are great. I found a great viewing place not far from Kalgoorlie on the road to Coolgardie.

I used to pop out that way myself. There was a clearing just in off the right hand side of the road (heading towards perth).

Other good spots were located jut out of town on the Menzies and Kambalda roads.

Hi Gary and welcome to IIS.

I remember Kalgoorlie well, I used to work at the Windarra nickel project as a geologist and later at the Lancefield open cut nearby.

That was nearly 30 years ago now but I still remember the sunday sessions at the Broad Arrow pub.

Cheers

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.Seems I've stumbled across quite a few ex-kalgoorlians out there.I look forward to gaining heaps of knowledge from this forum, just trying to decide on what equipment would suit an absolute beginner in astronomy and astrophotography.

Cheers
Gary

Hi Gary

I to am also new to astronomy and live in Kambalda west not far from you I think there are a few people out there that live in our area.

It would be good if we could meet up and possibly organise a few meetings and star gazing nights. I think this could help all of us
