Celestron CGX Mount - ASCOM & APT

I'm considering purchasing a Celestron CGX mount, however, I have a quick question in relation to connectivity.

I've been using an HEQ5-PRO for the past 6-12 months which I've been controlling via APT.

Am I correct in thinking that, in order to operate the CGX via something like APT I would need to connect to my laptop via the USB port on the hand controller?

Thanks in advance.

Any reason your not considering a Skywatcher EQ6-R mount ?
Payload ??
I can’t help you with Celestron mounts as have Skywatcher mounts
If you consider a Skywatcher I can’t certainly help and have all the procedures for controlling the mount direct from mount to laptop ( Ascom ) Also EQMOD , Stellarium and APT etc....
Sorry can’t help with Celestron

I have a CGX (5 years now). You may want to consider changing your old school ways if upgrading. Celestron have a software control app developed by Plane Wave, which provides a range of mount control functions, including an excellent multipoint sky modelling tool. Connectivity is provided by a dedicated USB port on the mount, which bypasses the EQ controller. You can still use the USB connection through the hand controller but the functionality is better through the CPWI software and the mount USB port.
You might get alot of help on the Cloudy Nights Mount forum section, as there are many CGX users there. Also Celestron Tech Support.

Thanks for the replies.

I did look at the EQ6, however, there’s nothing in stock anywhere in Australia.

I understand Celestron have their own software. Is this just for connecting to the mount or is it an image acquisition programme?

As long as I can keep using APT I’ll figure it out, haha

I’ll ask the question on Cloudy Nights.

Thanks again.

You would still need something like SGP, for imaging process and control. The problem I find with these " One App for Every thing" solutions, is that they do not do everything really well, but it is your decision.

I’ll look into it.

I’ve been using APT for everything with the HEQ5PRO and never had any issues so if switching to Celestron means I have to start using multiple programmes then I may re-consider the purchase.

Thanks for the input. 👍🏼

I am not saying you could not get it to work through the hand controller USB port, using APT. See what the Cloudy Nights guys say.
