Turnbull wants access to encrypted communication

In the SMH I read:

This would be a good situation in case of terrorists and those child porn criminals are abusing the internet, but I think that privacy of the the non-criminal civilian is also compromized.
Will this mean that VPNs will be monitored, or, worse, forbidden like in China or Turkey ?

And the real creeps seek other (darker) methods to bypass these laws.

The only way which really works is putting cameras and microphones in everyone's home, including the loo and bathroom, which obviously are DDR / Soviet ways of infringing someone's privacy.

So it will always be a balance between security and privacy, and now the balance is more and more favoring security and infringing privacy.

Old tv sketch show of the 60's "laugh in" had a skit where a guy with a Russian accent said. In America every house has a tv to watch, in old country every house has a tv that watches you. It's all for the common good, yea right comrade.

I think Ben Franklin got it right with his privacy vs security speech.
In their current incarnation, these clowns ( ie our govt ) cant be trusted with that sort of access. All the crooks need to do now is wait for the pollies to collect all the info into one spot for them, then they nick it.

You can bet someone is lobbying to sell them the system to make it happen.
Follow the money it is yours after all.
So who will be paid? Probably the same people who started the problem in the first place.
Find a boogie man start a new department, buy more guns whatever, ....look at the gear cops carry these days all necessary? And behind each item a supplier profiting from the slush fund they call general revenue.

Gday Alex

In some cases, it was reported the "terrorists" had reverted to couriered letters or std post for letters to PO boxes as a means of communication.
Sooo, will Mr Turnbull now want all private mail opened and inspected????
They will not stop things happening or make us safer ( in 98% of cases ), all they might do is catch the crooks faster after we are dead???????

Andrew

As an alternate view to all this.
Are we going to be allowed access to all their communications to ensure they arent doing deals with the russians/chinese to snag a good job after they get the chop????

yeah right

I'd like to see them crack 256 bit encryption when you have your own key. This is a beatup. If I encrypt my phone that's that, they cant access it. If I use telegraph or my own vpn they are buggered.

Now, I don't lock my phone or encrypt anything. If someone grabs my phone I have nothing to hide, so I don't really care. But what a lot of crap being spouted by turnbull.

Sorry for the rant, it just annoys me when pollies say stuff which cant happen

You don't have to...and that is a benefit.
I can only remember all the good things it seems and now if I can find my car in the parking lot its a great day.

Having experienced the cold war the novel 1984 filled me with fear but it seems there are more cameras now than George could ever imagine.

I think you all need to investigate the CIA/NSA/USG "monitoring" programmes/programs before calling it BS.

You know about the back-door vulnerability of Smart devices (in built) I assume, particularly Samsung (including Smart TV's that use the built in camera and microphone to listen/record you on remote command and without your knowledge).

And that some of the Ransomware vulnerabilities use exploits engineered deliberately? Wannacry has darker origins than you may suspect. Ask NSA.

Ask Snowden...and why the USA want his head still. Look into how the USA can shut down a countries infrastructure remotely - supply them with "foreign aid" equipment with inbuilt software vulnerabilities (or hidden viruses).

All this is taught in National Security courses at ANU. Its REAL.

If you think a 500 character encryption will stop them somehow, think again. Once on the network, always on the network. If they want the info, its not going to be hard for them to get it.
