Some pics from back home

Got this batch from one of my aunt overseas who's still an avid trekker in her mid 70s. This is a place in the pyrenees called the massif du neouvielle that has a small lake system. First snows of the season.

As kids we used to go downhill with these things. No shocks. First bump and you were up in the air, teeth and all. Many trees to avoid and much bruising.

I don't know if you had something similar downunder.

Well, as we had no snow where I grew up on our hills we used to build these with parts we could scrounge up that dad and the neighbours did not want. There were many obstacles to avoid and a bit of bruising was had also! Kids will be kids!

By the way, picture from internet, not an actual soapbox cart that I built.

Marc here we cannibalised the wheels from anything we had - typically prams or scooters - to assemble something that served the same purpose but on the pavement - usual obstacles being trees, bumps in the pavement etc. usual result being that you speared into either a fence or a parked car, or skittled any pedestrians too slow to get out of the way.

There was a large hill behind our place when I was a kid, consequently, we had grass sleds....... two 2"x 1" hardwood runners joined by a narrow foot rest and a wider "plank" seat, if you were lucky you had a piece of carpet tacked on to prevent splinters in your bum

. The bottom of the runners was rounded and shaped......I learnt to use a plane when I was 7 or 8 years old ('57 or '58)......Mum used to save any excess lamb fat so I could rub it into the runners.

I don't know who or when someone "invented" these sleds but there were three parallel tracks running down the hill that were really well worn so the idea had been around for a long time.

It was another time back then, simple fun
