In a complete rip off of Kunama's recent post of his design of a handle I took a wander round Bunnings today and this is what I came up with. Most of the items are fairly obvious and 1/4 inch stud bar holds the whole thing together and the ferrules at each end of the spring are the sort of thing you put on chair legs to stop them screeching. The beauty of the spring handle is that you don't even need to be able to measure very well as the spring compresses to whatever length you wish. (within reason)
The only tools required were a junior hacksaw, screwdriver and spanner.

To complete the saying, if necessity is the mother of invention then play is the father. I was just playing on a wet and windy Melbourne Sunday.

On a serious note, be careful Dave with springs and bare hands - when it twists the other way under load in your hands, it WILL pinch you...and the reflex to pinching is jerking away and letting go of the perpetrator...so BE CAREFUL!
