Thunderbird on Gmail

I started using gmail several years ago because it is so readily available. I have been using Mozilla Thunderbird as my email application as this has a lot of very useful features. Previously I was able to attach to Google gmail using single verification via a common password (Googles two stage verification did not work). However, early this month Google stopped access to Thunderbird since they now consider it a "less secure app". A couple of hours searching was unable to find a cure for this problem. I have now fallen back to Google's gmail application which is truly awful but at least it keeps my email alive.
Question: does anybody know a solution to the above problem or perhaps suggest a good email application that can interface with gmail (verification appears to be the main problem). Peter

Thanks Mark. How would I change my Thunderbird account to avoid Google classifying it as a "less secure app" ?

Hi y'awll,
Just a general heads-up...
If anyone has any kind of problem with either Firefox or Thunderbird,
may I suggest going to the mozillaZine dot org forum for assistance, ie; if you don't already.
A great group of very knowledgeable people there.

Not sure if this will be allowed, so...

Hi Mark

Please advise how I go about getting a new account. Tried but ended up in a very convoluted mess!
