DSI II as a guider

I have a DSI II and was thinking of using it as a guide camera. What would I need to do this?

I currently use an Orion Starshoot auto guider. Would the DSI II make an appreciable difference in finding guide stars?

I have an eq6 mount, ed80, starry night pro and other software.

I understand that I have to somehow loop the DSI through the computer software and back to the mount but not sure how it works and what is physically required to do so.

I appreciate any help.

Frank

Hi Frank

I'm assuming you are planning on using your ED80 as your guide scope. That being the case you may need an extension tube to bring the DSI 2 in to focus. I use a 1.25" flip mirror and from memory the focusser is extended 40mm when it is in focus with the flip mirror in place. My reticle is in the top of the flip mirror. Alternatively a 50mm extension tube would do the trick.

As far as connections go. I use EQDIR and EQMOD and also a powered USB hub in line on my setup. So I run the standard USB cable from the camera to the hub and then run a USB cable back to my laptop. From my laptop is another USB cable that runs to the EQDIR which is connected to my EQ6 where the hand controller would normally be. Photo of my setup is attached. You can zoom in and see what I mean.

By the way, is your DSI 2 a color or mono. Mine is a mono and is a really good guide camera (pretty sensitive) and a lot better (in my opinion) than the QHY5 I used to use, never have a problem finding a suitable guide star just clear nights to image in .

EQDIR can be sourced from Shoestring Astronomy, or locally via Bintel. Another option is to have a look at www.starstuff.com.au, he has an EQDIR equivalent and USB cable in one - very neat.

I hope my ramblings haven't confused you and all the best.

Wayne
