QSI583 First Light

Skippysky looked favourable tonight, so I setup in the backyard to do some testing.

Managed to get a polar alignment reasonably quickly with the aid of PHD

Eventually got focus with the QSI (needed the Camera Angle Adjuster to give enough back-focus!), then spent a while getting focus with the Autoguider through the OAG. The guiding took a little while to calibrate, but seemed to be running fine in the end.

So after all that, I started the camera up and imaged 60sec on M42 and was rewarded with a one recognisable image JUST AS THE CLOUDS ROLLED IN!!!!!

Didn't even bother to save the image I was so disgusted...

I then spent a while refining the focus of the autoguider through the OAG on Sirius through the light cloud. When it was clear the clouds were here to stay (and knowing I have a 12+hr day tomorrow) I packed up.

At least I managed to prove the electronics all play well together. I even did a plate solve on a 10sec image of Sirius and was able to sync the mount.

I need to spend a while outside in the daylight setting up the wiring loom so that it is all just plug & play when I go out to a dark sky site.

Congrats, mate. : )

This weekend was a complete write-off for me, too. : (

I am desperate to image again and hope to do some lengthy hydrogen alpha during the week, after re-polar aligning, considering the earthquake shifted the Earth's axis. : P

It can be frustrating to get the camera and guider all in focus with the wsg model. I set mine up for rough focus during the day and then did the fine stuff at night. It's worth the time to get it right and you only have to do it once and then lock it all down. I hope you have as much fun with yours as I have had with mine and that you get some clear skies.

Thanks Gents,

Allan - I'm hoping that I'm reading correctly into what you're saying that
I don't have to adjust focus of the OAG for different scope/reducer combinations?

That's correct. Once the guide chip is focused to the main scope, that's it.

Seems logical that the distances to the imaging planes would be identical, but wasn't sure if field curvature would be significant enough to require refocusing of the OAG.
