Knowing nothing, I'm intrigued by those telescopes that can be controlled by your smartphone - are they any good? Something like that might well appeal to my relative.

Any assistance that can be provided would be appreciated.
Thanks.
If your relative looks like he will get into astronomy I reckon a dobsonian reflector of sorts. I just picked up one brand new 200/1200 Saxon, delivered for $500 from E-bay. These require regular maintenance to cullumate so a passing interest wouldn't suite. A refractor would be the best in that case I reckon. Cheers

try finding a used computerized scope like celestron nexstar 4se. You can easily get one good used condition around 600. Its very easy to setup and align even for a beginner and takes away the the pain of manual moving and night sky knowledge thats a big plus for a beginner.

Avoid any kind of computerisation at this stage - it just makes things too complicated for a beginner.
And they could be put off for life.

Also avoid EQ mounts, go for AltAz, there is nothing worse than spending ages kneeling, bent double trying top polar align a scope before getting round to using it.

MY ADVICE BUY NOTHING, for anyone, let them chose what THEY want by first JOINING A CLUB and learning through trial what they need

AltAz is for beginners and advanced users
