Orion Starshoot Autoguider - problem

Bought this autoguider back in Feb and have had it working on an old XP machine. Last night, when the camera was plugged into the usual USB port, it identified new hardware and asked for drivers. I reloaded the software and drivers, which may have been an error. The PHD software said "no camera" and after a cycle or two of uninstalling and reinstalling, the computer no longer recognised "new hardware" or knew anything about the device. On autoplay the CD opened with the software in notepad, so I used explorer to get to PHD installation and the drivers. All those appeared to load properly. Giving that up, I tried on the Vista laptop, autoplay similarly opening with notepad so I repeated the process. Laptop did not find drivers and said device wasn't compatible with Vista 32bit, which should not be the case. Searching the web I find one other person who has experienced the same problem, but his fix didn't work for me. Binocular and Telescope are not familiar with this problem. Any advice will be welcome.

I had the exact same problem. Apparently Orion updated their drivers to support 32 and 64 Bit windows 7. In the process, this broke backwards compatibility. From 1.12 on. Phd now installs the 32/64 bit version of SSAGIF.dll for the Orion Autoguider by default (Orion request)
Users should either update the driver (www.telescope.com/rsc/img/catalog/lc/articles/ssag64bit.html) or rename SSAGIF_orig.dll (the previous version, still bundled with PHD to SSAGIF.dll in \Program Files\PHD Guiding if they wish to use the old one.

It appears as though the above URL is dead, you need to download the latest driver from orion.

http://www.telescope.com/Product-Sup...ategoryId=null

They are situated in the software downloads on the right hand side of the page about half way down.

I hope this helps

Thank you. I'll check this out. My first attempts at reloading drivers were using only the CD packaged with the camera, but subsequently went on-line to search (very unsuccessfully). I did notice a reference to "older drivers" but saw no associated explanation. One problem is that the CD opens the install routine in notepad rather than executing it.

A related question. Does the Starshoot CD have the ASCOM drivers on it? I can't find them anywhere on Orion's web site, and I don't have the CD.

The CD has the old ASCOM driver only

Best to download it off the Orion website for the latest one or go to Stark-Labs and IIRC there is instructions on how to go about it with a link

HTH
Cheers

+1. Latest drivers are the "64 bit" ones that work with 32 bit and 64 bit computers.

Do you mean the 64 bit ones for windows 7 on Orion site also work on 32 bit ?

On orion site there is a file called SSAGSetup.exe which says its for 32 bit
and SSAGSetupV2.exe which says its for 64 bit

Does V2 also install a working 32 bit version ?

I've loaded the SSAGSetupV2.exe driver package on 32 bit XP and they run and talk to PHD.

Certainly with Maxim now you can't use the SSAG without the V2 ("64 bit") drivers, and yes, I'm using XP 32 bit....
