Photozone (http://www.photozone.de) have a review of this lense and the 70-200 f4L.
Their opinion is that the 70-200 f4 is the better lense.
OF course their tests are done on terrestrial subjects.

I've had this lens for about 4 years now. I'll see what I can track down that was taken through it.

The only ones I could find on short notice were solar, taken using a 2x teleconverter. The vast majority of our shots through it have been terrestrial. We use this lens about 30% of the time, with the remaining time being split between a 24-70 f/2.8 and 100mm macro.

Phil,
I use the f4 version, mostly astro too, and it is a ripper.
If you are thinking Canon, take a peek at this:

Wow nice shots citivolus Gary i read that the F/4 is better then the 2.8 version. I dont no how better it is id like the faster lens for nightshots. I was looking at buying the TV60 but if i buy the lens i can use it for both night shots and day shot.

I have always liked the f2.8 versions, regardless of what focal length, and or brand. But the one thing that sold me with this as well as the 17-40 L f4 was the costs, plain and simple. If you can afford it, then go for it. Why not buy both the f4 and the TV60 (or similar), as combined they can't be too far from the cost of the single f2.8 lens, surely.
I have been using my two on the ST2000XCM lately, and they give a good middle ground, wider field view.

Hi,

I have the 70 - 200 f2.8L non-IS lens. I got the non-IS as it has less glass in it and so the image is a bit brighter and the image quality is a bit better. Also, for astro use, the IS is off anyway, so it would be an extra $800 for something that I would not use that much.

Anyway, both lenses are really very, very good. I doubt if you could detect any difference between them and a fixed focal length lens of the same aperture - eg the 200 f2.8L

I got my lens from http://centre.net.au/Canon_0007T3.html They have one in stock (according to their webpage). Otherwise they can be a bit slow in getting stuff - but they are generally very cheap.

I have one of these I use on a Canon 40D. It's a very nice lens indeed.
I hope one day to try this out on an ED80 or perhaps some widefield shots.

I got mine from Discount Digital Photographics in Sydney, best price I found. (not much help as you've already ordered yours)
