SAC 4.2 First impressions

Guys....I just received a SAC 4.2 which I had testing last night for only an hour....I am very impressed with it...firstly some info.

SAC 4.2 is a 1/2" chip 1.3mp planetery camera with a Rezolution of 1280 x 1024 max and runs on USB2. no other power supply used....just USB.

Sensativity is .3Lux 10bit colour.

I will be testing this against the others like toucam and LPI for guiding in Brisbane.

Likes

Its lightweight and air cooling(small fan)
USB2
Has 3 sensativity settings
Large 1/2" format chip
High Rez 1.3MP 3 times that of a toucam.
Easy to use.
Comes with 1 1/4 adapter and software
Very sensative camera.
From 1ms to 1 second exposures.
Affordable at $229USD

Dislikes

Looks to only work with software provided. Astrovideo
Air cooled is useless with such a small fan would do nothing to cool.
Tested it out on the moon last night and at it's lowerst 1ms exposure setting was still to sensative on the ED80.

look forward on testing it out primarily for guiding then as a planetary camera.

More to come as tested.

Hi Tony - Sounds very interesting. Don't suppose you have any tech data?key characteristics I'd be keen to find out more about are:

the pixel size (a lot of larger chips have larger pixels which then require larger image scale to fully utilise)?

is it a CMOS or CCD chip (think I read somewhere CMOS which suggests less sensitivity)?

does it spit out avis and if so what's the maximum frame rates given it has USB2?

cheers mate,

Will take a picture of the camera later...the results so far is the moon that looks like the white background of this site...lol

Remembering I am more after a light weight sensitive camera for guiding...I think this camera is to sensitive for the bright planets.

Nice.. Keep us posted as to how you like it.
I'm pretty sure K3CCDTools will run the SAC's.
Cheers

Next time you're up Tony we'll give it a run on K3 v3. I'm looking forward to see how you go with it.

Thanks Tony, and right neighbourly of you! Might take you up on that sometime, after you've finished testing it out. To tell the truth though I'm having a hard enough time finding a half hour here and there to image using the tried and true neximager with weather and work at the mo - the learning curve of something new would take me out of the game
