USB 2 Toucam in the works...
Seems Philips are working on a USB2 version of the Toucam . Spec details can be found in this pdf (260K).
From what I've found/read (taken with large quantities of salt)....
Due out in the next few months (Oct/Nov ish ).
Same CCD chip as the current Toucams.
Costs around ~68-86 Euros.
It'd be interesting to see what this little beast is capable of with the higher bandwidth and 90fps.

If it really comes out soon, i'll definitely buy it straight away.
To be able to image @ 30fps without compression and data loss, will be able to capture many more frames in a short period of time, to find the best frames where the seeing was momentarily the best.
It will be a much cheaper option than the Lumenera (>$1500) or any other high quality planetary CCD cam out there.

Once again with large amounts of salt.... The guy that made most of the statements I listed above, claims Philips are sending him a review sample by the end of October... so maybe by xmas time down in these parts if we're lucky?
The chap is a member of the QCUIAG Yahoo group.....

Seems the first lot have been sent out... Europe grabbing up most of them with apparently only 20 units making it to the US.

Very interesting, thanks for the link Andrew. Looks like a nice xmas pressie on the cards, though getting an adapter to fit might be a hassle.
I wonder if Steve Mogg has been thinking about this..

Yep, it'll be on my list for xmas too. It wouldn't take long to whip up a new adapter design so hopefully some shots in the near future, however I recall Robert saying in a QCUIAG post that he doesn't have USB2 on his laptop , so we might have to wait a little longer to see what this baby can really do with the higher bandwidth.

A second review. This one actually rips it to bits. Doesn't look too hard to use a different housing/hobby box etc, which could then allow the use of current adapters.

Hmm - pity it's not USB2.0 after all though, that's a USB1.0 driver in there.

huh? It's not USB2? What's the purpose of it then? I thought the whole idea of the new cam was that it was USB2..

From the review..... [quote] Unfortunately the camera is no real USB2 device in terms of bandwidth and throughput of data. USB view shows that it is recognized as a USB1.1 device. To test if it is not my USB port that is wrong, I tested a real USB2 device in the same USB port. See the screenshots. Left one is the SPC900NC, right one a USB2 external harddisk. USB view can be downloaded here: http://www.ftdichip.com/Resources/Utilities.htm

The Product Information Sheet on the Philips site says it is "USB 2.0 compatible"
