Strongman Mike pointed these little beauties out a few weeks ago to me. What a boon becasue now you can use filters on lenses you wouldnt have dreamed of in the past. brilliant idea

The only mention of lense incompatibility is with the EF-S lenses.
The 17-55 and 17-85 lenses are in this category.

You're safe, none of the L series lenses are EF-S.

Note that these are a new product from Astronomik, so, in theory you should be able to get them through BinTel who are their distributor in Aus. You might have to ring them to see if they are getting any in though.

Subject: AW: Canon EOS filters prices shipped to Australia

Hello David,

Thanks a lot for your request!

Unfortunately shipping costs to Australia are quite high, even for small parcels. The cheapest way is a regular post parcel. Shipping costs are then 38 Euros. But it can take 4-6 weeks until it arrives. Also our impression is that there is quite a risk that they may lose the parcel and if that happens it takes 16 weeks until the post refunds the money.

Right now production is concentrating on the main filter types, i.e. CLS, UHC and the clear filter. Halpha 13nm is being produced shortly, the plan is that it will become available shortly before Christmas. The OIII will become available sometime between January and spring 2008.

The filter prices themselves can be divided by 1.19 in order to get the price without VAT.

Best regards,

Patrick Woitala
Telescope-Service

So on that note I then contacted BINTEL - I ordered the OIII and the 13 Ha filter - couldnt go the 6

The one thats REALLY got my interest is this
Multi Emission Line
Narrowband filter for astro-imaging, similar to a UHC filter.
Thats like doing colour narrowband imaging in one shot. I guess it will be expensive, but its about time with so much one shot colour DSLR imaging about now, that they come up with a single filter that has , say a HA, O3 and maybe a S2 line, say 10 or so Nm wide each. Using such a filter for luminance on a monochrome CCD would be interesting too.

The potential of these filters has me very seriously considering a retrofit of my D40. It would mean my wife could still use the camera without any special hoops to jump through. I even ran it past her last night and she seemed impressed.

Well, as long as you don't use the EF-S lens... So you'll have to add the bucks for that to the cost equation.
