few hundred bob.

but it's not the dosh but the enjoyment u get out of it.

if i had more I would use what I have less lol. so that isn't necessarily more enjoyment. just more precision.

Earlier this year in melbourne the weather was very nice in the mornings just before dawn. Anyway I pulled out the 8" to look at Jupiter and goddam it looked like jup does thru like a 20" I have never seen such resolution. That was a one-off however. :/

3. As to the original thread, I have spent far too much for the frustration it has bought. Who pays for grief? Would be much less stressful watching TV every night (but mostly not as enjoyable). Thinking about it that's what I mostly do anyway because of the weather here
Just to clarify, when I do get to use my gear I enjoy every minute of it, frustration and all!

Neale.

I agree that many beginners will be best-served with an entry-level camera, but I also think that such a camera does not offer as much room to grow. It’s a difficult choice — personally.
I find the learning process of astronomy to be wonderfully fun. And it never really stops. In terms of a newer camera + one lens versus an older camera + two lenses, I think that different people would have to choose based upon their needs.

Well I'm surprised at where I'm at. I tallied what replacement cost would be if I lost it all and had to get everything again. Puts me in the $5k-10k range.

I do look at this thread though and people shocked at what they are spending on their hobby that they are so passionate about. Why be shocked. If you can afford it then there is no issue. I know blokes who spend (or should I say get loans) to buy $100,000 boats so they can go fishing, or spend anywhere up to $10,000 every time they buy a new motorbike (which can be six monthly). Astronomy is our hobby and we are lucky enough that we can spend very little to get such satisfaction from it and you don't end up smelling like fish or covered in mud. Maybe just a bit tipsy from a nice scotch we sometimes enjoy waiting for exposure runs to finish.

I bought my way too expensive gear at the beginning of 2014 with some of my super. I am still learning to use it (got the scope and mount sussed - now for the ccd / guide camera). The good news is that I bought it all when there was parity between the US and Aus dollars. I could probably sell it now and make a profit but I won't. I enjoy the learning, the company and it slows my brain fossilization.

Amaizing amounts more than 1st thought - I was grinding mirrors 20 yrs ago, $100 for good 10" blanks, 100 on grits, polish ect & a whole lot of manual grinding.
Now-a-days with technology, astro is amazing, but my back pocket struggles more, being on a carers pension last 10 yrs since missus's spinal injury.
I can say Ive used near 10k in the last 3 yrs, not much by average normal means, but a Ship load for this duck

This is really not a topic many people would feel like discussing in a public forum for a number of 'personal reasons'; but for the generations living their lives in social media who crave having their lives totally exposed for all to watch - then of course they will share, and the higher the number the better for the envy factor.

If that's you, then better get everything insured.

I have spend a lot of money on Astronomy equipment over the last 50 years, and wasted a heck of a lot of money on other things.

No chance of me disclosing the value of my equipment on open forum,
Seems a crazy thing to do.
Cheers

Judging by some of my imaging results not enough ...
To replace probably 10k but seeing as I acquired quite a bit or hardware gratis and built a lot more maybe 6-7k.
Some things just ain't worth trying to build.

But I enjoy trying ...

SWMBO doesn't mind, I manage my time for us and the clouds seem to manage it even more.

But as others have said I agree with the pleasure it has given me in many ways. And I could be spending a heck of a lot more on other pursuits, used to have a boat that got used about twice a year, now THERE was wasted money.

I’m wondering how many have conflated what they have spent, vs the replacement cost in current $, vs estimated secondhand value if sold.
