Amp Glow

Hi Guys,

Lately I have been experiencing Amp Glow while using the Canon 5D, could some kind person please explain why this occurs, would this be because of the longer exposures, or is it a combination of long exposures and hot weather combined.

Or is this a fault with the camera.

Thank You in advance.

Leon

No camera fault. It is caused my the amplifier mosfets that read out the image from the sensor giving off infrared photons as they operate. These are NOT temperature dependent and thus still happen even if the camera is cooled. The longer the exposure the more impace this constant flow of infrared photons will make. The silly thing is the amp is not needed during exposure only at the end, to read out the data. Thus the 40D turns off the amp during exposure.

I came across this amp off mod for the 300D. may be ones for other cameras

Thanks Scott, I see what you mean, and understand the reasons why this happens, but i think i will leave the mod alone.

Ah, so that was how they got rid of the amp glow problem. I was looking at some of my 10D DSO shots the other day, and was reminded just how bad it used to be.
