Whats that orange glow?

Hey guys a mate of mine in NZ took some piccies from what he reckoned was a dark sky site and made a vid from them and there was this orange glow in the sky like street lights reflecting off cloud or something.
So I took the p--- out of him coz it obviously wasnt a dark site but he swears there was no lights any where.
Now I seen some vids like his ( which are time lapsed frames joined up ) from Paranal in Chile and another site there from at 4,300m! high and they have the glow to!
www.astrosurf.com/sguisard
So what is the orange colour glow? What causes that?
Its usually down near the horizon and up to may be 30-40 deg.

Some impressive videos there! Some of those show the Zodiacal light, maybe that's what your friend captured too? I saw it from Paranal in 2008 it was very prominent like a cone extending up at an angle from the horizon.
BTW don't know where your friend took his pictures from but the night sky around Mt. Ruapehu in NZ is extremely dark, I remember being completely in awe one night after skiing. I've never seen it so dark anywhere, it was truly spectacular - yes even darker than at Paranal

Yeah mate pretty flash all right!
Dunno about the zodiacal light coz it doesnt look like a cone shaped light to me.
What it is a orange coloured light thats horizontal and not always there in the vids.
It looks like orange street lights shining off a thin cloud layer near the ground and some times is faint and other times is quiet bright.
But definitely a orange layer not a yellow cone going up in to the sky.
Hey I wanted to go boarding at Ruapehu but I never got the chance but I did drive past there one night and man it is black as the inside of a cow thats for sure!
How could it be darker than Paranal?
Isn't Paranal and those Chile sites the darkest place in the world?
But yea Ruapehu is dark and so are some places in the south island to like around Mt John obsy at Tekapo.
It is like outback dark down there --- shame about the blardy cold tho!!!!
