What tripod for my 450D?

the biggest lens I have is the kit zoom lens .. but what is a decent lightweight tripod that I should be looking at?

a quick google and people say Manfrotto or Bogen or Kirk but I am not sure which model and even why these are so good ?

I do like my Velbon 586 tripod. Lightweight, strong, has a fluid head which makes it a pleasure to slew. The mounting plate is relatively large making the camera more secure I feel.
It makes the other pods I've had seem clunky.

I brought a Manfrotto head and tripod for my 450D last week. I'm quite
impressed with it. Solid build and fairly light, about 2.6kg all up.

Tripod: 190XproB, max load 5kg
Head: 804RC2, max load 4kg

I'll probably upgrade the head later but the tripod is very funky. but for
what I use it for the head is more than adaquate.

Wow! Vanbar is cheap. But I do notice they quote AUS$ as well as US$,
you sure that special is in AUS$. I cant seem to find anymore info than
whats on the image on the left

I paid $478.00 from Camera House Lismore, $350.00 of that was just the
legs. I do notice that the head cost a bit more on Vanbar than what I
paid. Cant seem to find the legs.

If so... go the $299.00 from Vanbar.

Cheers,CS

Andrews comm & aoe sell manfrotto clones for about 179, fairly sturdy, will hold 20x80 binos and save yuo some money - they have WO optics ones for 219 which has a nicer fluid head, and reaches 6ft

Ben,

That surely does look like a serious sucker. Mine is about a 3rd the
weight of yours. Still I'm impressed at how solid it is even though
it doesn't have the extra leg stablisers as yours. They even put
a rubber coating on two of the legs presumably for comfort. I
walk through the bush/river beds with camera attached quite
comfortably with the lot resting on my shoulder.

Love my Manfrotto too, you can have the camera all the way to
ground level. Although I like the head on yours : ) how much did
that cost you? if you dont mind me asking.

Cheers,CS

Rob

Hi Rob,

You can get the 405 Geared Head off of ebay for about $600..

that's something i wish i looked out for when I bought mine!!

buying it locally it cost me nearly $900!!

you can get its baby brother, the 410, which still holds 5kgs; for about $300 on ebay or $400 locally

I'm not unhappy with it, it is still rock solid even with my 400mm f2.8 hanging off it. A vast improvement on my 25 year old Slik that my dad gave me when i was 14.. That thing used to jiggle like a bowl of jelly haha!

I think I can live with the one have for a lil longer lol. See where this
photography stuff takes me. The lil brother sounds ok-ish... move it to
the wish list.

Not sure if you've got your tripod yet or not, but just thought I'd offer my 2c worth.

They're like astro mounts. The sturdiness and load capacity of them is critical for stability and sharp images. You need to make sure both the tripod and the head can carry much more than just the weight of your current gear to allow for possible future lenses, flash/speedlights, flash brackets maybe and on it goes.

I know you only have a kit zoom lens at the moment, but down the track you may want a heavier lens like 70-200 f/2.8 or 100-400 etc. Their a couple of kgs each alone.

Rule of thumb might be to double or triple the weight of gear you plan to put on it right now.

The capacity of the head is also important. Keep in mind you may want to turn the camera on its side for a portrait orientation shot. Don't want the head to slip under that load.

Thanks, but I pulled the trigger afew days ago ..after considering the alternatives, finally went with the Manfrotto 190XproB from Vanbar-I will hopefully be getting the GST back...so its still dearer than the alternatives but its really solid and coming from a no tripod environment its a huge step forward

BTW Vanbar has a Sydney store as well
