DMK51au02.as

Does any one here know whether the Imaging Source DMK51au02.as is good as a guide cam using PHD?

I am thinking of using it with the QSI wsg683-8 on the off axis guider.
I thought i try to use it before i consider buying a Lodestar or even QHY5L-II.

Thanks guys.

John

geez thats over a grand for the dmk51 - the lodestar is way cheaper as too the qhy5l-II. i have 2 lodestars and the dmk41 and a few others. go the lodestar or you can go an ASI120mm for half the price. the asi will work too

Lol yeah, that's over the top for a guide camera! Go the ASI120mm.

Instead of using PDH you can use Metaguide, it uses 'high' frame rate from video for guiding, as well as real-time collimating.

The ASI120mm and the qhy5L-ii are very similar (same cmos and similar price), although the qhy5L-ii has the same form factor as the Lodestar.

Yeah I have been reading the great reviews on the lodestar and the QHY5L-II but the problem is that I already own a dmk51au2.as which I purchased for solar imaging. It works great as a solar imager being able to capture full disc

However I purchased a new imager (QSI 683wsg-8) and it has a OAG ans since I already have the dmk51 I thought I use that first before I spend on a new guide cam.

I just wanted to know if it makes a good guide cam.

Thanks.

I would give it a good shot since you already have one. If it doesn't work you can buy one of the others.

As for sensitivity, Metaguide does frame stacking in real-time (each frame a centriod), or you can stack multiple frames which are then used for the centriod calculation. Anyway either metaguide or PHD should do the trick.

Well to my excitement the QSI 683wsg-8 arrived and I quickly placed the dmk51 as the guide cam and my verdict is that the dmk51 makes an absolutely useless and unreliable guide cam.

There is way too much noise for reliable guiding.

I had an old Meade DSI that I hadn't used in months and decided to give it a try and I have to say I was incredibly surprised how sensitive it was. I have had no trouble finding a guide star where ever I pointed the scope with only 1sec exposure using PHD.

So guys hold on to your old cams because you never know when they could be useful.....
