Images John West rejects (SH2-302 and Melotte 66)

Not your pretty picture subjects.

The first is the very faint SH2-302 which required 16 hrs total imaging time.
I decided on a HaRGB image this time rather than a straight Ha.

Higher resolution here.

Next is Melotte 66 a very ordinary looking open cluster whose claim to fame is that it is one of the oldest clusters in the galaxy.

Its the only reason why you would image this object.

Nice work Steven,

A pity you didnt post these 5 days ago, the first one looks like the "broken heart nebula"...sniff, perfect for Valentine's Day.....

I quite like the open cluster too, diffraction spikes are my thing...

Cheers

Chris

Very nice images! Thanks for showing these lesser known objects, both were new to me.

Both are great images tof objects I haven't seen before. The first one though looks like a head with an eerie face looking upwards (with a trail of soot from the nose).

I LOVE the obscure stuff... I just can never get to a dark place to have a crack at them!

SO many obscure PN's I am waiting for winter for again

Great images, Melotte 66 open cluster is a big thumbs up! Nice colours and great depth. The Snowman Nebula...16 hours, way to go! Way faint and come up just nice.

Well done Steven.

Thanks for the comments.

SH-2-302 looks more like a blood soaked piece of chopped liver.

I'll pass the various interpretations of SH-2-302 to my sister who is a psychologist.
I'm sure see will be able to fashion a profile for each individual.

Thanks Mike.

Perhaps you should try a wide field image of SH2-302.
